Preventing Falls at Home: A Practical Checklist for Families

A few small changes around the house can greatly reduce the risk of falls. Walk through each room with this checklist.

Living areas and hallways

  • Remove or secure loose rugs and cables.
  • Keep pathways wide and clutter free.
  • Place night lights between the bedroom and bathroom.

Bathroom

  • Fit grab bars near the toilet and in the shower.
  • Use a non-slip mat inside and outside the shower.
  • Consider a shower stool for those who tire easily.

Bedroom and stairs

  • Keep a lamp within easy reach of the bed.
  • Make sure stair handrails are firm on both sides.
  • Mark the edges of steps clearly.

Strength and balance exercises matter just as much as a safe home. A physiotherapist can assess your family member and suggest a plan that fits their needs.
